About the Artist:
Raya Bruckenthal was born in 1975, She lives and works in Tel-Aviv. Apart from her art work, Raya is also a Lecturer at Tel-Aviv University, Department of Film and Television and in The Jerusalem College, Department of Art therapy. After graduating her B.F.A. Fine Arts in excellence, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem in 2000, Raya has completed her M.A Multidisciplinary Program of the Arts, the University of Tel-Aviv. Selected Solo exhibitions: Concrete and Cement –point of no return, video & installation, gallery of kibutz Be'ery (2008), German Speaker video installation, Haifa Museum of Art (2002). Among her group exhibitions: Art TLV (2008), First Portrait, Helena Rubinstein Pavilion for Contemporary Art Tel-Aviv Museum of Art (2003). And also, participated in festival such as the Tel-Aviv Cinematheuqe, video art of The Center for Contemporary Art (2003)
About the Artwork:
The photographs are stills from a new video art that describe young prostitute that resembles Jodie Foster’s character in Martin Scorsese’s "Taxi Driver". In the video, "Fake Jodie" is giving birth. She delivers a small furry animal instead of a human baby. The stills emphasize the non-humane situation of the young girl's body that becomes an object in her position, a simulacra and an imitation that improvised the character from the "real" movie. The image is inspired by Allen Jones's pop art piece: "Table", 1969.
