About the Artist:
Yosef Joseph Dadoune was born in Nice in 1975. Five years later, he emigrated to Israel with his mother. His childhood was spent in Ofakim, a working class town located in the Negev Desert. For 12 years, Dadoune studied the Talmud and Jewish Philosophy in a yeshiva, before residing at the Paris Cité Internationale des Arts through a grant. Most of the themes in his work come from his youth and formative years; and notably his own complex identity, pulled in several contradictory directions through which he cautiously evolves. Joseph Dadoune considers the human being through his relationship with conquest, power, the sacred, politics, etc. – periodically going back again and again to the frictions between the East and West. His protean art takes several forms - photography, drawing, performance, film, video, sculpture, vinyl record, etc. In October 2007, a one-man monographic exhibition "Yosef Joseph Dadoune - Sion a cinematic trilogy" show the entirety of his work on film and video at the Petach Tikva Museum in Israel curated by Drorit Gur Arie, presents a trilogy of cinematic works: Universes, chanti, and Sion. The key work in the exhibition is the film Sion starring actress Ronit Elkabetz. The film was created in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, Paris. Dadoune has participated in numerous group exhibitions locally and abroad. In Israel he has had two solo exhibitions, at the Janco-Dada Museum, Ein Hod, and in Alon Segev Gallery, Tel Aviv, in addition to many one-person exhibitions abroad: at the Galerie Martine Aboucaya in Paris, and has just presented in Athens his new film, Bunker Buster, which was shot at the War Museum of Athens, at Le Plateau Contemporary Art Center, Paris; Palais de Tokyo - Guest curator program for FIAC Cinéma international art fair, The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nice, theater of the Museums of Marseille, Museum of Modern Art, Strasbourg; and the Film Museum, Düsseldorf. His films have been presented in various film festivals as well as in various museums and galleries in Malta, Germany, and Dallas. SION (2006) was shown at the Louvre Museum, and is part of the Contemporary Art Department collection. in March 2008 The Tel Aviv Cinematheque present premiere screening of his cinematic works: Universes 2000-03 (60''), Sion 2006 ( 11''), and Sion 2002-07(60'').
